F2 Newsletter - January 2010 Introduction
Created Saturday, 30 January 2010 in General News & Events
We thought it was about time, now that the smoke has started to clear from the doom and gloom of the last 12 to 18 months, to bring you our spin on things in the world of Internet technologies, with a particular focus on the rapid and continued growth of the Joomla! content management system, one of the world's leading open source CMSs and our 'tool' of choice for website implementation. Along with other popular and internationally-supported CMS frameworks, such as Drupal, TYPO3 and WordPress, Joomla!'s popularity is on the increase and, given that many organisations are therefore implementing the same CMS framework as their partners, resellers, and affiliates, this represents a significant opportunity for promoting inter-organisational cooperation and enhancing business-to-business, business-to-government and business-to-consumer communications.
This homogenised view of the Internet, where millions of websites are emerging with different design templates but the same underlying content management framework, is making the application developers role easier and, as a result, their focus is now on developing applications that can 'plug in' where they are required and where they can. Websites running these CMS frameworks are, from a developer's perspective, viewed as operating systems into which functionality may be presented with the result being less reinvention of the wheel. For organisations choosing these CMS frameworks, the benefit is a plethora of functionalities that they may use to achieve a desired goal, such as online shopping, document management, membership and so on.
The web is therefore starting to look and operate more and more like a local area network with websites as operating systems and applications that can be installed into them. In the social and business networking arenas there are also multiple 'front-ends', such as Facebook, Xing, LinkedIn and MySpace, and many industry giants are leading the charge in the area of multi-site web systems syndication, with programmes that assist developers so that they have "less to learn to build for
'Syndication' is therefore what the web world, in its new social context, is all about, with the aim being to identify where (else!) to present your content, services and contact information; be they individual articles, an event calendar, a shopping cart or even an e-learning/certification system, including facilities that assist members in managing their roaming social profiles across each site.
It is therefore important to stay aware of these trends in order to identify any opportunities that they may present in a business context. Our company's focus is on developing applications that can take advantage of this global growth in CMS 'nodes' (F2 terminology in referring to individual websites running a particular or common CMS framework), with our own contribution being the F2 Platfform.com suite of multi-site Joomla! applications. We therefore look forward to speaking with you about your needs and any ideas that you may have where you believe this approach may be relevant and in coming months we'll be highlighting an array of projects where this multi-site implementation has been necessary and has offered additional benefits to each client.
In the meantime, please find below a small collection of Joomla!-related articles and we hope to be of service to you on your next web project.
All the best for 2010 to you and your team.
Regards,
The F2 Team
