Joomla! Overview

Joomla! is a full-featured content management system that can be used for simple web sites through to complex corporate applications and portals. Joomla! is a web systems ‘framework’, around (or into) which your organisation can implement an array of advanced web services for whatever purpose, including:

Email newsletters, surveys and competitions;
Event management;
‘Web-to-PDF’ content publication and sharing systems;
Coursework, e-learning and assessment/certification systems;

Joomla! is therefore analagous to an operating system, such as Windows or Linux, into which you can load 3rd party applications (E.g. MS Word) to achieve various functions. Joomla! is, however, a web services 'operating system' or framework that only accepts specific types of 3rd party web-enabled applications, such as those that exist at the Joomla! Extensions Directory.
